Community Service

Our students will leave Bronx Letters as the future leaders of our nation, the innovative engines of our economy, the shapers of our culture, the custodians of our planet. We celebrate this promise by providing opportunities for our students to lead, serve, and re-imagine our school, our communities, our city, our nation, our planet – here and now. Bronx Letters students in all grades engage in quarterly service learning projects, participate in school leadership and design committees, serve as mentors for peers and younger students, and teach classes in every discipline.

Learning Leaders Program

During the spring of 2007, the Bronx Academy of Letters partnered with the Coleman Fung Foundation to establish the Learning Leaders Program. The basic tenets of Learning Leaders are community service and college preparation. During the academic year, students complete community service at the local Bronx site of a larger NYC multi-service agency, Episcopal Social Services. After successful completion of 150 service hours, students then attend a pre college program at UC Berkeley during the summer. The Coleman Fung Foundation graciously covers all expenses for the summer program and additionally awards a stipend of $1500 to any student that passes his or her UC Berkeley course with a grade of B-or better.

Bronx Letters Haitian Relief Fund

In response to the devastating earthquake, various student groups at Bronx Letters came together to create a Haitian Relief Fund, in which funds were donated to Partners in Health, an organization with very strong ties to Haiti. Generous donations from students and staff totaled over $1,350! It was truly amazing to see students shelling out their lunch money to contribute to this cause. Our library windows were adorned with the names of those who donated.

NYC AIDS Walk

Please extend a warm thank you to the following 43 students (below) who participated in yesterday's AIDS Walk. Many, many thanks to Galardi, Applegate, Ford, Riddick, Cheney, and Yennys Nin, for coming out and showing support. We couldn't have done it without you!  A very special thanks to Sierra, who coordinated AIDS awareness week and the whole walk effort.  We will be sending our school donation at the end of the week.
